# Connect your VPS instances through a private network

A private network lets authorised services communicate on an internal segment separate from their public addresses. VXLAN is a transport technology for this segment; it does not encrypt communications.

## Request the connection

Open a [ticket](/documentation/en/guides/how-to-open-a-support-ticket.md) with the VPS instances to connect, their roles, the desired addressing plan and your bandwidth or segmentation requirements. The team confirms availability, conditions and the delivery method for your services.

Once the network is prepared, use the private addresses, interface and prefix provided. The number of IP addresses, network size and actions available in VMmanager depend on this configuration; they must not be inferred from a generic example.

## Configure the operating system

On Linux, identify interfaces and routes before adding an address:

```sh
ip -br link
ip -br address
ip route show
```

Preserve the default route for your public access. The private network must not accidentally become your new Internet gateway. Check for overlap with a VPN network, container network or another interface.

Do not disable automatic configuration globally on your operating system. Adjust only the relevant interface using the network manager already in use and the settings delivered.

## Test and protect

Check connectivity between two private addresses and the expected application service. Limit the firewall to your authorised peers and bind internal services to the private interface where appropriate.

If confidentiality requires encryption, use TLS or a suitable encrypted tunnel. Segment isolation and encryption address two different needs.

UP-Transport’s VXLAN transport in Zurich is another service: see [Network and BGP](/documentation/en/network/networking-and-bgp.md).
