# Use IPv6 on your service

New VPS plans include an **IPv6 /64 by default**. It is no longer necessary to select, then disable and re-enable an option to request this prefix.

VDS, dedicated servers and network services have their own addressing settings. Always use your service’s information; a prefix provided to another client is not suitable.

## Find the settings

For a VPS, open its details in [VMmanager](https://vps.upnt.ch/), then the IP addresses and IPv6 network settings. Note the assigned address, prefix and gateway. For another service, check the delivery documentation or ask support for these settings.

Wait for deployment and ongoing network operations to finish. If the prefix does not appear, report the service and its status to support. Do not delete an existing assignment to try to recreate it.

## Check the operating system

On Linux, these commands read the current state:

```sh
ip -br link
ip -6 address show scope global
ip -6 route show
```

Check that the address belongs to the assigned prefix and that a usable route is present. The presence of only one global address does not mean your /64 is missing.

If manual configuration is needed, change the network manager already used by your image: Netplan, NetworkManager or ifupdown. Preserve IPv4, the actual interface name and the supplied settings. The gateway cannot automatically be inferred from the prefix’s first address. A server does not become a DNS resolver because it has been assigned an IPv6 address.

For Netplan, check the configuration, then test it with a recovery console available:

```sh
sudo netplan generate
sudo netplan try
```

Confirm only if connectivity works. Also check the configuration actually in place if rollback is necessary. On Windows, use the interface’s IPv6 properties and the delivery settings.

## If the connection fails

Check the address, route, DNS and firewall, preserving the ICMPv6 exchanges needed for IPv6 to work. Attach the outputs above to a [ticket](/documentation/en/guides/how-to-open-a-support-ticket.md).
